Opportunities in Renewable Energy: Electricity & Heat From Biomass

This is the second in a series of sessions that focuses on the goals and value of sustainability and the state of advanced technologies in the fields of wind, solar, biomass, hydropower, and biofuel.

December's topic "Electricity and Heat from Biomass Sources" will be of particular interest to those interested in hearing the answers to the questions:  Are the options we hear about for renewable energy truly the next generation of electricity, heating oil and vehicle fuel?  What is the status of these newer technologies?  What opportunities are there for entrepreneurs and businesses?  What does the future hold for us as we travel the road to sustainability?

About our speaker:

Wayne McFarland, P.E., is Vice President and Director of Industrial Services for Stearns & Wheler, LLC. , is a graduate of Cornell University, the University of California, Berkeley, and LeMoyne College, and is a licensed professional engineer in 12 states.  In 30 years of practice, has directed over 700 projects related to energy and environmental engineering, including several biomass combined heat and power projects.

Stearns and Wheler has provided a complete range of engineering and environmental services to municipal and private clients since 1950.  Over 250 professionals in 12 offices cover the complete range of technical design disciplines, in water, wastewater, civil, solid waste, environmental, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as architecture, environmental sciences, hydrogeology, and information technology.  We have successfully completed dozens of renewable energy development projects using biogas from anaerobic digestion and recovered landfill gas.  Recovered gas is used to generate heat and electricity for onsite use, and to supplement local utility power supplies.
