The cafe speaker is David Jasper, graduate student in the College of Engineering & Computer Science at Syracuse University.
You might know David better as "The Rocketman," volunteering the past four years at the both the annual Rocket Challenge and the Build 'em and Bust 'em competition held at the MOST. David completed his Bachelor of Science in Information Management and Technology and is working on his M.S. in Information Management and Information Security Management from the top ranked program in the country.
David has worked for the University for about 4 years and currently performs systems and network administration for two divisions within the university encompassing departments all over the upstate campus as well as SU satellite locations in New York City, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles, California.
David also worked in India for about a year as a Software Engineer for the global consulting firm named Infosys. During this time he was working on programming online/e-banking applications using Java and other Web development technologies. David and his brother Steven are entrepreneurs in their spare time and have a company called The Sun Brothers.
This year they planted 10 acre of sunflowers and sold them as cut flowers at farmer's markets, festivals, and concert venues. The left over flower heads, yielding black oil sunflower seeds, are going to be used for bird food and dried and pressed for their oil. The oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids essential for cardiovascular health and mental well being. Many companies like Frito-Lay are using sunflower oil as a frying base for obvious health reasons, and the brothers would eventually like to work on methods for producing bio diesel.
Modeled after the International Café Scientifique, the TACNY Junior Café Scientifique features monthly talks by a guest speaker on current science, mathematics, engineering, or technology topics.
The program is sponsored by TACNY, the Technology Alliance of Central New York, and hosted at the MOST.
Please note: The target age for the TACNY Junior Cafe` Scientifique is Middle School & High School students, along with their parents or guardians. However, we ask that the question and answer period is for the students ONLY!
Following the talk, attendees are invited to explore the exhibits at the MOST. Additionally, continental breakfast will be served.

The Clean Tech Center will host a closing reception for the exhibit, "Renewal of a Community Resource: Onondaga Lake's Historic Role in Creating Syracuse's Identify" currently on display at Syracuse Technology Garden.
The closing reception will differ from the Open House hosted by the Tech Garden in September as there will be several opportunities for visitors to take guided tours with Dennis Connors, Onondaga Historical Association curator and local author.
Visitors can examine over 30 paintings, maps, and photos depicting the lake's historical significance to region, over the past 500 years. The exhibit begins with several paintings discussing use of the lake by the Iroquois and then illustrates the transition of the lake from a major manufacturing and commercialization site for salt and soda ash to a destination resort community. The final pieces in the exhibit discuss the current status of the lake as well as possible future value that would result from the restoration of the waterfront community.

Seminar Speaker Steven Gal is a career entrepreneur. In July 2009, he returned to teaching entrepreneurship at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. Steven's interests focus on the founding and building of new high-growth ventures. Over more than a decade in the technology industry, Steven has co-founded and grown six venture-capital backed companies, raising more than $100 million. These lead to an IPO, several successful sales, and one failure. During these years, he solved entrenched problems for consumers and businesses across areas as diverse as identity theft, personal privacy, customer suppport, e-marketing, and internet search. Prior to his technology career, Steven was an associate professor of clinical entrepreneurship in the Entrepreneur Program at USC's Marshall School of Business. Earlier, he spent several years on Wall Street in risk arbitrage and on the floor of the New York Futures Exchange. Steven is an attorney and a member of the California Bar.

Central New York Biotechnology Symposium 2010 will bring together Upstate New York's most promising and innovative biotechnology companies, including start-ups from universities such as SUNY ESF, Upstate Medical University, Syracuse University and Cornell University, as well as independent biotech start-ups. This year, the program adds a green focus with sessions on biofuels and ag biotech.
Hosted by The Central New York Biotechnology Research Center, the annual Biotechnology Symposium will be held March 22, 2010. The event will also provide an ideal opportunity to showcase the Central New York Biotechnology Research Center, a SUNY building that is currently under construction in Syracuse. The sixty-four hour workshop combines a comprehensive classroom presentation with practical application of the tools through project exercises. In this workshop, we introduce the basic concepts of Lean Six Sigma and demonstrate the tools and methodology necessary to successfully apply them within the DMAIC process improvement framework. Exercises are structured for the participants to apply the learned skills to complete a business-focused project while participating in the classroom experience.
Participants will gain an understanding and experience applying most of the tools within the DMAIC framework. The Green Belt will be able to support Black Belt projects and lead most continuous improvement projects.

The Center for Economic Growth (CEG) announced today that the 10th Annual SmartStart UNYTECH Venture Forum, will be held in Syracuse May 17-18, 2010 at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center. The forum is Upstate's premier venture forum to highlight the best early stage companies to investors.
"Supporting high growth companies is important for the Tech Valley region, as well as across the state. Moving this forum to different cities each year allows us to diversify opportunities presented to our entrepreneurs. The Center or Economic Growth is looking forward to another successful forum, connecting researchers and start-ups with the funded needed to move forward," stated F. This is the largest event for early stage companies and entrepreneurs in Upstate. It showcases local innovation before the entire Northeast investing and technology community.
